Many in Alaska mailed primary ballots later than recommended

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Many Alaska voters are mailing absentee ballots later than a one-week deadline recommended by the U.S. Postal Service. That’s based on an analysis of recent primary voting. The Anchorage Daily News reports that a record number of absentee ballots were cast in the Aug. 18 primary. Even more are expected in November. Late ballot mailing could affect the result. State law requires mailed ballots to be postmarked by Election Day and most postmarking takes place in Anchorage, which is a day or more away by mail from most of the state. Late postmarks are the second highest reason why absentee ballots are rejected.
